Seringapatam 1799: Lachlan Macquarie and the British in India

4 May - 31 May, 1999

An exhibition examining the history and significance of the British military campaign against Tipu Sultan and the kingdom of Mysore in southern India. The content is based on a research trip undertaken by Robin Walsh [Macquarie University Library] in March 1999 to retrace the footsteps of Lachlan Macquarie in India in the year 1799.

The fall of the island fortress of Seringapatam and the death of Tipu Sultan on 4 May 1799 marked a turning point in British imperial ambitions in India and presaged the establishment of English control over the whole subcontinent.

Seringapatam 1799 explores this complex and important event through the eye-witness accounts of Lachlan Macquarie (1761-1824), the future governor of the colony of New South Wales (1810-1821).

The exhibition includes historical transcripts, 18th Century artefacts (coins, military uniforms and regalia, medical equipment etc.), photographs, maps, and books depicting and describing life in India in 1799.
