Fabric sculpture and photographic exhibition by Simone Paterson.
Collection of fabric-based sculptures and installations derived from Simone Paterson's work and studies in Florence, Italy as the recipient of the NSW Travelling Art Scholarship (1995). Works include traditional casting techniques, casting silk without internal support structures, and colour photographic reproduction. The large scuptural forms were created after a visit to the Venice Carnivale and explore questions of celebration, colour and mystery, as well as the dislocation one can experience when travelling overseas. Other influences include the mannerist painter Pontormo and Italian Neo Realist Cinema. The photographic works in the exhibition examine questions of personal identity and the feminine, and the nature of social constructs.
