Rules and conditions of use
All users of the Library have a right to pursue their research or study without unnecessary disturbance or distraction and have an obligation to respect the rights of others. Unseemly behaviour is not permitted in the Library. Any person who is causing a disturbance will be asked to leave. All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
The ID card of any Macquarie student or Associate or Reciprocal Borrower in breach of Library rules shall be surrendered on request of the University Librarian.
Users of Macquarie University Library must:
- show their Macquarie ID card, Associate or Reciprocal Borrower's card or other evidence of identity when requested by an authorised representative of the University Librarian;
- comply with the provisions of the Copyright Act 1968 and the Copyright Amendment (Digital Agenda) Act 2000 currently in force. Users are referred to the statutory notice posted adjacent to copying machines. Copies of these Acts are available for reference in the main Photocopying Room and at the Information Desk;
- present all books and the contents of bags and cases for inspection on request by a staff member, or when the electronic security alarm indicates that an item may have been incompletely loaned.

Computing Facilities
Use of all computing facilities in the Library building is subject to the University's Information Technology Security Policy & Rules. Computers on levels 2, 3 and 4 are provided by the Library for research and study only.
Noise
- Be considerate of others.
- Turn mobile phones to silent on entry to the Library. Calls may be taken.
- Use laptop computers in designated zones only.
Food and Drink [excluding quiet zones]
- Library users are permitted to consume cold food (wrapped or in a closed container) and covered or bottled drinks in the Library.
- All rubbish must be placed in bins and study areas left free of litter.
- Any spills should be reported immediately to Library staff.
Quiet Zones
- Quiet conversation is permitted on levels 1 and 2 of the Library and in all group study rooms - including the use of mobile phones.
- Levels 3 and 4 of the Library are Quiet Zones: mobile phones may be used for messaging and ring tones must be set to silent.
- During the examination period and two weeks prior, levels 2, 3 and 4 of the Library will be designated as Quiet Zones.
Safety, Health and Emergencies
- Smoking is not permitted in the Library.
- Except in cases of emergency, the Library does not page users or accept telephone messages on their behalf. A notice board for personal messages is provided in the Library foyer.
- Library users must obey public announcements regarding closing times.
Accessibility
- Only guide dogs and other animals approved under the University's Disability Policy are permitted in the Library.
- Library lifts are primarily for the use of transporting books, library equipment, and people with disabilities.
Noticeboards
Noticeboards and glass cabinets are available in the foyer for placing advertisements, notices and distributing leaflets. Permission of the University Librarian is required if leaflets and other materials are to be distributed elsewhere in the Library.
